ALEX ISRAEL: AS IT LAYS

Alex Israel presents his first solo project in Los Angeles, AS IT LAYS, an installation anchored by a series of 30 televisual portraits of iconic and influential Angelenos. Filmed on a sunset-hued set that Israel constructed in his Pacific Design Center studio and on locations in and around Hollywood, a DIY talk show conflates the traditional art of portraiture with the Pop technology of mainstream media.

MOCA's biggest art celebration of the year features gallery tours by Contemporary Art Start students, hands-on activities, entertainment, and more. Inspired by Ends of the Earth: Land Art to 1974 and Cai Guo-Qiang: Sky Ladder, participants will create a project or perform an action that integrates thinking, planning, executing, and documenting.

Performing Activism: Mediagenic Art from Three Weeks in May to the Occupy Movement

For the third and final Engagement Party Art Talk, Grant Kester, chair of the visual arts department at UC San Diego, will moderate a discussion between artists Suzanne Lacy and Janet Owen Driggs on the evolution of performative activist art over the past 35 years, particularly with regard to its relationship to the changing media landscape.
